So let's get to know Morgan. 1) Where did you come up with your pen name? I was born with it! I just use my regular given name as my pen name. 2) At what age did you decide to become an author? Something definitely happened when I turned 30.

Morgan Bell: The Write Stuff by News Of The Area - Modern Media - April 19, 2017 www.newsofthearea.com.au/morgan-bell-write-stuff-25900SALAMANDER Bay author, editor and publisher Morgan Bell encourages writers to “get involved” in the local and online writing scene. “Join a writing group, in person or online (try facebook.com/groups/flashfictionchallenge/) and get involved with your local writers’ centre and writers’ festivals,” she said. “If you can’t afford workshops, volunteer.” Morgan certainly embraces her suggestions.

Rowan Tree Editing UK - Review: Morgan Bell's 'Laissez Faire' https://rowantree-editing.uk/index.php/blog/review-morgan-bell-s-laissez-faireFrom fairytales to moments of pathos, from science fictions to parables, Morgan Bell’s Laissez Faire is similar to her earlier work Sniggerless Boundulations in that it collects weird and disorientating vignettes and microfictions, but feels more developed. Bell’s voice retains her witty absurdism, but it is complemented by a greater confidence that allows more depth of situation and character.

Read Freely: Why you should read Morgan Bell’s Laissez Faire sable.madmimi.com/c/16969?id=10868996.42854.1.ec146abb869eeb6f17d891f59a5c2101Do we need to read it before we start on Laissez Faire? You don’t need to read Sniggerless Boundulations to enjoy Laissez Faire. There are no common characters, each story is a stand-alone. They share a similar layout, each containing 15 stories. Both books are really diverse. What genre would you put them in? Literary. What kind of readers will it appeal to? Edgy, open-minded folk who are looking to broaden their horizons. Fans of Lovecraftian horror, Lynchian suspense, and the growing movement of experimental microfiction.

Since the campaign ended many people have communicated their regret in not pledging before the due date. For those people, this site has been created to allow pre-orders to continue coming in. Paperbacks will be posted out in Dec/Jan after the first print run. If you pre-order through this site you will be receiving a first edition. There is also an option to have your paperback signed.

Guest post by Morgan Bell Kickstarting An Anthology brsbkblog.blogspot.com.au/2015/09/guest-post-by-morgan-bell.htmlA seed of an idea Have you ever thought about editing an anthology? I love editing. And I love the joy that community publishing projects bring to emerging writers. For many people an anthology is a first chance to get published. It can also be a new chance for an author to get noticed, to rustle their leaves a bit in the virtual forest of indie books An anthology, because of the mass of contributors, is a marvel of collaborative energy. The production value is higher. The distribution is wider. And the good will is stronger. Every author in the collection comes with its own team of supporters: friends, family, and fans. An anthology is the perfect project to crowdfund.

Sniggerless Boundulations by Morgan Bell - Audiobook review on Dab of Darkness dabofdarkness.com/2015/09/07/sniggerless-boundulations-by-morgan-bell/They are mostly suspense-filled pieces. Most of them I quite enjoyed. There are some real thoughtful gems in this collection, capturing in stark light the darker nature of us humans. My three favorite stories were The Dermoid Cyst, Earth Mites, and Shark Fin Soup. There were a few stories that flew by way too swiftly for me & were over so abruptly I was left bereft and wanting more. A few left me with too many questions. Yet for the most part this was a delightful collection of dark short stories. The Narration: Jon Severity has the perfect creepy voice for these stories. It??s a little rough, like that of a beloved uncle who has smoked a pipe since he was 15. And yet he is often telling these mini-mysteries where the main character may or may not be the murderer. His voice totally worked for those stories specifically.

Hunter Writers Centre - Rant by Morgan Bell "Why can't I use a comma splice?" www.hunterwriterscentre.org/blog/rant-by-morgan-bellWhy cant I use a comma splice? Every once in a while I encounter a grammar nazi, sometimes it can happen several times a day, sometimes I can go months without stirring the beast. See what I just did there? That is called a comma splice. I joined three independent, but related, clauses with a comma only. I didnt supplement the comma with a conjunction, and I didnt end each clause with a full stop. On this one hallowed eve in the not too distant past I found myself engaging in what is known as an internet argument. There is a saying about internet arguments: Arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics, even if you win, youre still retarded. I knew I was arguing with an idiot because my opponent immediately proved the following internet forum laws: Shaker's Law - those who announce their imminent departure almost never actually leave Law of Exclamation - the more exclamation points the more likely it is a complete lie Danth's Law - anyone who declares themselves victorious has probably lost They asserted that my defence of the comma splice as a legitimate way of separating clauses in a run on sentence was a slippery slope to the ruination of the English language, and thusly would lead to the dismantling of the publishing careers of every individual who viewed it.

Author Interview: Morgan Bell, by Susan M Leitz snoozen.wix.com/susan-m-leitz#!another-author-interview/ckjuMORGAN: I would like to write a book of movie reviews/essays of all my favourite movies . I would bunch movies together in categories and use all of my favourite quotes and trivia. I feel like I need to watch a lot more movies before I have the knowledge base to pull it off. I am very inspired by Vito Russos The Celluloid Closet, and would love a large portion of my analysis to center around queer characters and themes. MORGAN: I lived in Tasmania for a brief period when my life felt completely upside down. One of my best friends came down to visit me and we stayed a night in this odd little pub in Launceston that was owned by a work acquaintance of a friend. The whole night was super surreal like we were in a Lynch film. As the night drew to a close we went to our room and ended up sitting on the edge of the bathtub smoking cigarettes out the window and just laughing for a good hour or so. It was pure bliss. I will write it up one day as a short story. Chris Cornell (if we are just willing people to do things they would never do in real life) could sit in a rocking chair of my front porch (I have neither a rocking chair or a porch) and sing me the soft lullaby songs I imagine he sings to his children while I fall asleep on a hammock (I also dont have a hammock). Basically Chris needs to provide the venue and equipment for this scenario.

Morgan Bell featured author on the Feb 2015 newsletter of Jennifer Douglas Literary Publicist https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7j9OeO05MBPNmpRa1gwNU5vSlU/view?usp=sharingAmerican short story writer Nathan Englander has said that aspiring authors can be paralysed by a misunderstanding of the advice write what you know. Many people equate this oft quoted expression as an instruction to make all your stories thinly veiled autobiographies. Englander said If youre a drunken, brawling adventurer, like Hemingway, no problem. Similarly, if you were the kid of a slave owner in confederate Missouri, in a Mississippi River steamboat port town, you will be well-positioned to pen the next Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer. This was Mark Twains real experience, and the write what you know quote is attributed to him. At a writing workshop in 2014 I had a brief exchange with Australian fantasy and historical fiction novelist Kate Forsyth on this very topic. She makes it well known at her speaking engagements that she dislikes the expression write what you know because it limits peoples imagination. It was not until Kate researched every detail about the culture and customs that Dortchen was submerged in, that she was able to form her on the page. Therefore it is possible for one to write about a topic or universe that they are not personally familiar with. Now I begin to wax philosophical. My contention is once you complete your research, the constraints of your subject became known to you. You didnt know them at first, but you found out, and now you know. Given this new-found knowledge, you are able to fill in the detail of how your character would have reacted in a given situation with how you would have reacted were you in her exact same shoes.

Morgan Bell Talks Short Stories and Red Coconuts with Jennifer Douglas Literary Publicist www.jenniferdouglasliterarypublicist.com/interviews/morgan-bell-talks-short-stories-and-red-coconutsNeil Gaiman writes a good short story, I recently saw him speak (and sing) at Sydney Recital Hall and he read a piece called Adventure Story that was pure perfection. Cate Kennedys A Pitch Too High For The Human Ear and Tobias Wolffs In the Garden of the North American Martyrs are must-reads for short story lovers. I was dreaming about red coconuts that took one-hundred years to ripen and the enveloping warmth of reconnecting with an old friend. It was like the word silencio in David Lynchs Mulholland Drive. I can read people really well, I probably missed my calling as a cold-reading psychic charlatan.

Interview: Morgan Bell by Jerry Beller (Author Alliance) - My Author Friends Interview Series authoralliance.net/morgan-bell/I love picking out the names for my characters, researching the origins and meanings of names, and working with short and long syllables and dull and sharp vowel sounds to develop a name that is absolutely perfect for a character. I also I love giving my characters unique speech patterns where appropriate. And Im a sucker for the big reveal of a hidden quality in a character, something unexpectedly bad or good, something refreshingly unusual or comfortingly common. I like my characters to have flaws and vulnerabilities and quirks. Horrible characters are the most fun to write, but they usually have some redeeming personality trait or motivation.

Review by Jennifer Douglas Literary Publicist goodgabblebookreviews.blogspot.com.au/2014/12/sniggerless-boundulations-by-morgan-bell.htmlWhilst scratching my head I was at least thinking more deeply about the content and meaning of the story. Those that did not leave me wondering tipped the other scale with a thought provoking ending. I suppose this is where the balance fits so nicely. Morgan Bell has done a wonderful job of using few words to say so much. I give her credit for this as this is something that a lot of writers struggle with and a skill within itself. Morgan Bell seems to have got it down to a fine are.

Buy Novascapes ebook on Smashwords https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/472433A fantastic collection of short fiction. Minotaurs, mermaids, vampires and dinosaurs compete for space alongside devils, angels, aliens and completely indescribable entities. The authors collected in Novascapes transport you from one side of the multi-verse to the other and leave you breathless and wide eyed at the possibilities of simple existence. Novascapes is a collection of short speculative fiction stories by authors either from or originally born (or connected in some major way) to the Newcastle, Hunter and Central Coast regions of NSW, Australia. The stories are as varied and wonderful as the authors who penned them.

Here is my interview with Morgan Bell, by Fiona Mcvie authorsinterviews.wordpress.com/2014/11/05/here-is-my-interview-with-morgan-bell/I have very vivid dreams, and often wake up and jot down imagery and phrases. Sniggerless Boundulations is a phrase from a dream. They are invented words from my subconscious, and I decided to stick with them because they represented who I am as a person and a writer. It has a certain sleepy creativity vibe to it. Fiona: What book are you reading now? Morgan: I just finished Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn and am starting Dreams & Shadows by C. Robert Cargill The following is an excerpt from my latest story, entitled A Deer In The Shunting Yard:

Author Interview: Morgan Bell - by Kathryn Elizabeth Jones idea-creations.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/author-interview-morgan-bell.htmlI have stories (or the seeds of stories) written on the back of envelopes, on scrap paper, on post-it notes. All the characters are mirrors of the inexplicable and often self-defeating things we all do. I put out my debut collection of short stories earlier this year, it is entitled Sniggerless Boundulations and as the tagline suggests it is the horrors of life in fifteen slices. It is full of tension and unease and delicious anxiety and jealousy. They are only little tales most fall into the category of micro-fiction or flash fiction but they are concentrated and potent. I've been very inspired by the episodic structure of Amy Tans The Joy Luck Club and the films of Tarantino. Its about time we had a postmodern Australian feminist dystopia!

Author Snapshot: Meet Morgan Bell - micro and short fiction author (by Rowena Holloway) rowenaholloway.com/meet-morgan-bell-micro-and-short-fiction-authorIn the moving process I brutally culled my piles of useless papers, putting anything crucial aside: a few group certificates, my cat registration papers, a friend contact list from back when phone numbers only had six digits, and any creative writing pieces. From amongst the rubble emerged the contents of Sniggerless Boundulations.

Nomination for Book of the Month (September 2014) on eBook Miner https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1979795-ebm-botm-september?page=2#comment_105643583Immediately captivating, Sniggerless Boundulations introduces readers to bizarre medical conditions, industrious creatures, conniving cops, killers, dead bodies, a rescue mission, homoeroticism, nonchalant students, a secret garden, and the road to hell. This collection of fifteen short stories is a cross-section between dreams and reality, and an examination of the horrors of life. Themes include fear, time, aging, anxiety, and jealousy. The introspective Sniggerless Boundulations combines literary and speculative fiction with razor sharp dialogue and surrealist imagery. It has Lynchian suspense with Wildian social commentary and wit. Self Publishers Showcase called Sniggerless Boundulations a triumph. The writing has been described as crisp, clean, sharp and vivid, sucking you into this boundless world of layers, and a hybrid of unfiltered reality, humanist morality play and whimsical Bizzaro.

Review by Paul Martin: Morgan Bells Sniggerless Boundulations selfpublishersshowcase.com/review-morgan-bells-sniggerless-boundulations/Like I said at the start, the writing was almost film-like and you could nearly see the camera fade between the stories, which is a triumph because the characters and scene in each tale were barely described and yet it was brought to life so vividly through the dialogue and the portrayal of the characters emotional states that physical description was unnecessary.

Morgan Bell on Goodreads blog (interview by Joyce Strand) https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/6600040-what-the-experts-say-morgan-bell-authorQ: What makes your stories unique? Morgan Bell: They come from a unique place, within the world, within society, and within my perspective. They do not conform to short story conventions, in structure or in length. They also have a common narrative and themes running through them as a collection. I write entirely in third person, and I have a strong voice, its like being led into the wilderness by someone you trust.

Author Interview: Morgan Bell - Jeanz Book Reviews jeanzbookreadnreview.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/promotion-interview-sniggerless.htmlI am currently reading a paperback edition of Ann Learys The Good House, an unreliable narrator first person recollection of a local middle-aged alcoholic real estate agent, fictional, but very realistic. It has been fantastic. I also have Dathan Auerbachs Penpal on the nightstand, a creepy look at childhood memories. Did you have a favourite author as a child? I loved Enid Blyton, then a bit older I read everything by Robin Klein, John Marsden, and David McRobbie. I also liked by Babysitters Club, Im sure I collected every book in that series, and was a huge fan of the horror writer Christopher Pike.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: Morgan Bell, Author - Strand's Simply Tips strandssimplytips.blogspot.com.au/2014/07/what-experts-say-morgan-bell-author.htmlQ: Can you explain the meaning and significance of the title SNIGGERLESS BOUNDULATIONS? Morgan Bell: It is a non-sense phrase that stuck in my mind while I was half-asleep. It sounded to me like something the Dormouse from Alice In Wonderland would talk about in between tales of treacle and drawing a muchness from much of a muchness. Linguistically it translates to a calculated series of steps forward. I like the riddle quality and the weightlessness of the phrase.

Sniggerless Boundulations Interview on Lovely Reads (Serenity Shield interviews author Morgan Bell) serenityslovelyreads.blogspot.com.au/2014/07/sniggerless-boundulations-interview.html1. So what made you write these short stories? I wrote these stories over three years after returning to my hometown of Newcastle Australia, after a long absence, in a period of rebuilding and re-acclimatising to living in a post-coal-mining-boom regional centre. A lot of the stories are about adjustment and fear of change and awareness of time passing. A short story collection is a bit like a mezze platter of writing, a bag of mixed lollies if you like. I like Strings & Ribbons for its poetry and reprieve. Its placement in the collection is like a lighter musical interlude on a heavy rock album. Mrs Jackson was an actual anxiety dream I had, much of the imagery has a Freudian bent. ... riffing off a few fairy tales and nursery rhymes and the odd Dickensian villain.

Author Spotlight: Morgan Bell on Missy Writes by Melissa Frye www.melissamfrye.com/missywrites/author-spotlight-morgan-bell-queenboxi-interview/MF: If I gave you a hippo where would you hide it? MB: This question reminds me of the infamous Van Halen demand about brown M&Ms in the dressing room MF: If you could jump into a book, and live in that world which would it be? MB: Obviously I would want to be in woods of some kind, magical woods. I could possibly settle for Sherwood Forrest, I could wear green stockings with a bunch of merry men. MF: Sniggerless Boundulations developed from a collation of scraps of paper that you had scrawled on during your weekly writers groups. Did the scrawlings and eventual stories emerge from prompts, observations or pure imagination?

Interview with author MORGAN BELL - Peace, Love & Writing (Prudence Hayes) www.peaceloveandwriting.net/?p=186310. Do you and your characters have any similarities? If so, what are they? Anything neurotic, paranoid, or self-doubting is essentially a little reflection of me. I am prone to exhausting myself with over-thinking. I am also the quintessential observer straight man to eccentric exchanges. Im sure every character I write has some element of me in it.

I was given confidence to present my work in its current structure by collections like Jim Craces The Devils Larder, Tim Wintons The Turning, and Deborah Levys Black Vodka. As for voice I am a huge fan of Oscar Wilde and Jane Austen and their subtle witticisms with cleverly placed choice of words in dialogue and description. I am probably even more influenced by screen-writers like Charlie Kaufman and Stephen Frears.

Author Interview - Morgan Bell on Bunny's Book Reviews www.blog.kybunnies.com/author-interview-morgan-bell-queenboxi/Was it easy to pick the title for your book? The title, Sniggerless Boundulations, came to me in a dream. It is essentially jibberish, but as an invented phrase, linguistically, it means a calculated step forward, which is what I was attempting to do with my life at the time. What advice you would give to new and aspiring writers? Keep your sentences short. Do not use adjectives. Show, dont tell. Break these rules every once in a while to prove youre not a robot.

Mental illness in Sniggerless Boundulations - guest post on Laura Brown's blog laurabrownauthor.com/2014/06/02/guest-blog-post-morgan-bell-writing-about-mental-illness/In Garsdale the cavern represents the depths of depression and the struggle between the broken part of you that wants to stay hidden and the highly-functional part of you that is frustrated because it has to spend so much energy battling the lost and frightened broken part. It is a reflection of the splintered psyche we all have. In Mrs Jackson I essentially retell a common anxiety dream, I have these dreams often, trying to ward off something bad, and being responsible for something that you are unable to take care of. In real life that something is yourself, but in a dream you may be herding cats or literally attempting to hold back a tide.

International Women's Day Art Prize and Exhibition www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/_Documents/Events/IWDART+-+Community+.pdfMorgan Bell is a successful entrant in local exhibit with her piece Chastain (2014, printed ink on canvas, 100cm x 100cm). Theme: Selfless Acts. Category: Community. Chastain is a digital manipulation of a climactic scene from the film Lawless (2012) by Australian director John Hillcoat. This derivative work is a snapshot of the fear and horror this woman experiences realising that sexual violation of her body can and will be used as a strategic blow in a violent gang conflict. Women in wars and civil conflicts are often subjected to systematic rape as a means of psychological warfare. The obscuring and shadowing of this womans face represents the secrets women keep about rape, selflessly motivated, hoping to reduce the intensity and duration of the larger conflict.
